About this artwork
Derelict Junction is a real spot located near McMurdo on the South Western corner of Antarctica. It's now somewhat of a civilised area, even sporting its own bus stop to transport workers back and forth from the main city of McMurdo. Before all this development, it was merely a collision of ice. I've encountered these ice wastelands in other parts of Antarctica, and I’m particularly drawn to the imagery the name of this place evokes. The painting itself is abstracted and painted in a style that pays homage to the European Picasso style. Of course, Picasso never experienced such a place and never tried to paint it. He was too engrossed in the beauty of the South of France. However, these ice formations do lend themselves to a certain type of abstraction. I imagine that the first people to reach there must have felt as if they had landed in a location of complete desolation and extraterrestrial disorder. It's odd to think that it is now so close to the largest human settlement in Antarctica!' Andrew Lansley
