About this artwork
Sir Ector’s Wood is where young Arthur, also known as the Wart (which rhymes with Art), loses his way while pursuing a stray Goshawk. This forest is a realm of magic, and, most importantly, where he first encounters Merlin. The forest is populated by a variety of characters, some benevolent, some malevolent, and others, like King Pellinor, simply bonkers. The Wart returns back to Sir Ector’s castle after capturing the hawk, accompanied by Merlin, who becomes his new tutor. The key element of this story - a young boy losing his way and finding not only what he was looking for, but also a mentor and spiritual guide, is worth noting. The magical aura of the forest also plays a crucial role in the narrative. In his book, 'The Hidden Life Of Trees', Peter Wohlleben talks about how trees create an atmosphere by releasing not only oxygen but also plant pheromones and other chemicals. Some trees create more acidic environments and each type of wood gives off its own unique blend of air. Studies have been conducted to understand how these environments influence human chemistry, and the effects have been found to be remarkably beneficial! So, perhaps the magical aura in Sir Ector’s Wood is just a figment of imagination, or perhaps it isn’t? Regardless, it's a fascinating tale and one that sparked my imagination when I was around seven years old, mostly reading under the dim light of a torch late into the night. I still have my original copy of that book; T.H. White’s "Sword in the Stone."Andrew Lansley
