About this artwork
A book called "Lastrae Recurva (Bree's Fern)" was released by Bradbury and Evans in London, back in 1854. This was the first nature print endeavor by Henry Bradbury (1829–60). He also published a 21 plate volume titled "A few leaves from the newly-invented process of 'Nature Printing'" with Bradbury and Evans that same year. Bradbury had mastered this groundbreaking technique in Vienna under the tutelage of Alois Auer (1813–69).In Britain, this technique was copyrighted by his father, William Bradbury. Much like photography and other image technologies of the mid-1800s, the aim was to depict the natural world in a more direct way. The method involved placing an herbarium specimen between two metal sheets. This would leave an imprint on the softer surface, which was then processed to create the printing plate.
