About this artwork
Lysimachia Vulgaris, better known as Great Yellow Loose Strife, was published by Bradbury and Evans in London, back in 1854. It marked one of the first nature printing attempts by Henry Bradbury (1829–60), who was noted for his innovative techniques that he had learnt from Alois Auer (1813–69) in Vienna.This new process of nature printing was patented in Britain by Henry's father, William Bradbury. It was in line with other mid-19th-century imaging technologies, like photography, that aimed to capture the natural world more directly. The method involved sandwiching a herbarium specimen between two metal sheets. The objective was to create an impression on the softer surface that would then be treated to form the printing plate. This book featured a collection of 21 plates and was aptly named "A few leaves from the newly-invented process of 'Nature Printing'".
