About this artwork
Common Butterbur (Petasites Vulgaris), published in London by Bradbury and Evans, 1854Henry Bradbury, born in 1829 and died in 1860, launched his initial nature printing attempts in a book featuring 21 plates. It was called "A few leaves from the newly-invented process of 'Nature Printing'" and was published by Bradbury and Evans in 1854. Bradbury had learned this cutting-edge technique from Alois Auer in Vienna, who lived between 1813 to 1869. Henry's father, William, patented the method in the UK. Similar to photography and various other image technologies from the mid-1800s, the goal was to more directly capture elements of the natural world. The method involved placing a herbarium sample between two metal sheets to create an imprint on the softer sheet. This imprint was then treated to produce the printing plate.
