About this artwork

This artwork is among the dozen remaining pieces that Camille Pissarro created when he resided in London between 1870 and 1871 during the Franco-Prussian war. It's one of the countryside scenes he painted, much like the landscapes around his home in west Paris. Though the painting's abstract vibe hints that it might have been painted outdoors, it was actually finished in several phases in his studio. The print's colours are a perfect match to the original, and it has been given the green light by the National Gallery. Every time one is bought, it helps support the museum's work.

About the artist

Camille Pissarro (10 July 1830 – 13 November 1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas. He was a key figure in the development of both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism and was one of the first artists to embrace the use of plein-air painting. Pissarro was also a teacher to many of the great artists of the early 20th century, including Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat, and Paul Gauguin. He was also a close friend of Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir.
