About this artwork

Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a British artist and poet, known as one of the main contributors in founding the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This brotherhood was a collective of artists, critics, and writers from the mid-19th century who focused on portraying traditional topics like religion with sophisticated arrangements and utmost realism. Rossetti created a chalk illustration called 'Reverie' in 1886, featuring a woman deeply engrossed in her thoughts. Jane Morris, the spouse of textile designer William Morris and Rossetti's muse and lover, was the model for this drawing.

About the artist

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (12 May 1828 – 9 April 1882) was an English poet, illustrator, painter and translator associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He was born in London to Italian parents and was educated at King's College School. His work was deeply influenced by his early love of poetry, and his later interest in medieval Italian art. Rossetti's personal life was marked by tragedy, including the death of his wife and his own mental health issues. He was also a major contributor to the revival of interest in the art of the Middle Ages.

Also associated with: Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, King's College School, Elizabeth Siddal, Christina Rossetti, William Morris.
