Johannes Vermeer was an accomplished painter from the Dutch Baroque Era, who was particularly known for his skill in capturing domestic interior scenes. His work is recognised globally for his remarkable use and handling of light. He was known to approach his artwork meticulously, often using high-cost pigments. His most famous work, 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', completed in 1665, features a young girl adorning a turban and a large pearl earring. This painting has been the focus of numerous fictional works, including the bestseller by Tracey Chevalier that imagined the story behind the creation of the painting.

About the artist

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter who is known for his masterful use of light and colour. He was a member of the Delft School, a group of Dutch Golden Age painters who were active in the city of Delft. Vermeer's works are known for their realism and attention to detail, and his use of light and colour has been widely admired. He was also known for his use of symbolism and allegory in his works. Vermeer's personal life is largely unknown, but it is believed that he had a large family and was a successful art dealer.
