About this artwork
The Rolling Stones line-up in 1968 included Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts. Well known British photographer David Wedgbury captured them during the pinnacle of the sixties. His collection is a treasure trove of portraits featuring some of the greatest British musicians, including The Rolling Stones. This English rock band, established in London in 1962, was a departure from the prevalent pop rock of the early 60's. They were instrumental in shaping the distorted style that would come to characterise hard rock. Wedgbury's portrait of the band is a raw, real snapshot, with each band member looking off in different directions, set against the backdrop of an elaborately decorated dinner setting - a fitting reflection of their gritty sound. Buying this supports the efforts of the National Portrait Gallery.
