About this artwork

The young dancers at the Paris Opera in the late 1800s were known to don the ballet outfits seen in Edgar Degas's painting. Degas often requested the dancers to repeat their steps over and over, capturing these distinct movements in numerous paintings. The dancers' vibrant red hair is a striking feature, anchoring them in the softly blurred surroundings. The print we have here is a perfect colour match to Degas's original painting, and it has received the green light from the National Gallery. About the artist

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French Impressionist artist well known for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings of ballet dancers, race horses, and other scenes of modern life. He was a master of the use of pastels and is particularly identified with the subject of the dance. Degas also explored the expressive potential of photography, and was an early adopter of the medium. He was a close friend of many Impressionist painters, including Mary Cassatt and Édouard Manet.
