About the artist
A pioneer for women's suffrage, Sylvia, whose father was legal reformer Dr Richard Pankhurst, pursued human rights advocacy after studying art. Notably, she was detained eight times between 1913-1914, engaging in protests and hunger strikes. A staunch anti-war activist during WWI, she later combated fascism, aided Jewish refugees in the 1930s, and advocated for Ethiopian sovereignty, ultimately receiving a state funeral in Addis Ababa.
