About this artwork

Ferdinand Hodler was a well known 19th-century Swiss artist famous for his realistic depictions of portraits, landscapes, and genre paintings. He later created his unique style of symbolism, which he dubbed parallelism. Hodler's interpretation of Lake Thun, a picturesque Alpine lake in Switzerland, is beautifully showcased in 'Thunersee with Reflection'. Here, the sky at the top of the painting is beautifully mirrored in the lake beneath.

About the artist

Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) ascended from humble beginnings in Berne to become a leading Symbolist artist and a pioneer of the Modernist movement. Not only famed for his depictions of Swiss history, he was also highly respected for his autobiographical pieces. Artists such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele esteemed his work with the Viennese Secessionists.

Hodler's apprenticeships with Ferdinand Sommer and Barthélemy Menn laid the groundwork for his artistic style, deeply rooted in French painting and Gustave Courbet's Realism. His unique blend of Realism and Symbolism culminated in the seminal work, The Night (1889). Hodler's international fame solidified when he won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris World's Fair.
