About this artwork

Ellen Terry (1847-1928) was a Coventry-born actress, whose parents were both actors. Born as one of eleven children, she made her mark on the stage as a child in 1856 alongside Charles Kean. She married in 1864 with George Frederic Watts, who was a painter and also the one who painted her portrait. Despite the 30-year age gap, they separated after a year when Terry ran away with another man. Terry had two children with architect Edward Godwin and made her comeback to the stage in 1872, eventually becoming a leading actress. Her most iconic roles were performed under Henry Irving's management, with whom she toured across the provinces and America seven times. As she grew older, she shifted her focus towards producing plays, lecturing, and writing.George Frederic Watts (1817-1904) was a well known painter and sculptor. His large-scale allegorical works, with universal themes, resonated deeply with the Victorians. He was regarded as the most exceptional English artist of his era. Watts's artwork during the 1860s shows Rossetti's influence, often highlighting sensuous pleasure and vibrant colors. This can be seen in his portrait of his young wife, Ellen Terry.
