About this artwork

Georges Seurat was a well known French artist following the Impressionist era, most famous for creating the pointillism style of painting. His most recognised piece is 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte'. Seurat used pointillism to meticulously portray Parisians enjoying their time at a park beside the River Seine, all on a grand canvas. This masterpiece is regarded as the cornerstone of the neo-impressionist movement.

About the artist

Georges Seurat , born on 2 December 1859 and died on 29 March 1891, was a French post-Impressionist painter and draftsman. He is best known for devising the painting techniques of pointillism and chromoluminarism. Seurat's works are characterised by a strong sense of structure and careful drawing, and a vivid use of colour. He was influenced by the Impressionists, but his art was more precise and analytical. Seurat was a quiet and introspective man, and his personal life was largely private. He was a perfectionist who spent much of his time in the Louvre, studying the works of the Old Masters.

Also associated with: Neo-Impressionism, Divisionism, The Bathers at Asnières, Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Un dimanche après-midi à l'Île de la Grande Jatte, Chromoluminarism.
