About this artwork

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec created this piece using a mix of oil paint and pastel. Jane Avril, who was known as a "frenzied orchid" and also referred to as 'La Melinite', much like an explosive, was a well known performer at the Moulin Rouge. The carriage wheel and light featured in the background hint that she may be entering the establishment, possibly gearing up for a performance. Jane's lean face reveals a persona quite different from the outgoing sensuality that brought her fame. Nonetheless, the hat and coat hanging on the wall to the left could be a subtle nod to her male fan base. The colour of this print is true to the original and gets the Courtauld Gallery's seal of approval. Every purchase contributes to the Courtauld's work.

About the artist

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (24 November 1864 – 9 September 1901) was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator whose immersion in the colourful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century allowed him to produce a collection of enticing, elegant and provocative images of the modern, sometimes decadent, affairs of those times. He was a Post-Impressionist painter who bridged the gap between Impressionism and modern art. His style was influenced by Japanese prints, and his subject matter focused on the world of entertainment, particularly cabarets, music halls and circus. He was a chronic alcoholic and suffered from syphilis.

Also associated with: Montmartre, Moulin Rouge, Jane Avril, Aristide Bruant, Yvette Guilbert, May Milton.
