About this artwork

This still life painting may be a tribute to the bounty of nature's flowers and fruits, but the arrangement is far from natural. The sight of a pineapple delicately balanced atop a stack of flowers and other fruits is nothing short of amazing. Back in 1777, the invention of the microscope allowed artists like Jan Van Os to depict insects with remarkable precision in their artwork. Just take a look at the fly on the stem of the rich red rose and the butterfly resting on the tulip petal. This print is meticulously color-matched to the original painting and has the seal of approval from the National Gallery. Plus, every purchase you make aids the museum's work.

About the artist

Jan van Os, born in 1744 and died in 1808, came from Middelharnis. His artistic skills were refined under the tutelage of Aert Schouman, an esteemed painter known for his animal, still life, and decorative art. Jan then joined a group of painters in The Hague in 1773.

The rest of his life was spent in The Hague, although his artwork gained international acclaim. His exhibitions were held in places as diverse as London, France, and Germany. His specialty was fruit and flower pieces, following in the footsteps of Jan van Huysum, though he did dabble in landscapes and seascapes. Jan's artistic genes continued in his offspring - Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os, Maria Margaretha van Os, and Pieter Gerardus van Os, all followed in their father's painting path.
