Jean Francois Millet , born October 4, 1814 and died January 20, 1875, was a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. He was a realist painter, focusing on scenes of peasant farmers and rural life. Millet was influenced by the works of the Dutch masters, such as Rembrandt and Hals, and the French Romanticism of Delacroix. He was also a member of the Barbizon school of painters, which included Theodore Rousseau and Narcisse Diaz de la Pena. Millet was a deeply religious man, and his works often reflected his faith. He was also a passionate advocate for the rights of the working class.
