About this artwork

Here we have a rather personal self-portrait from the early period of John Constable. It appears he most likely used a mirror, as suggested by the opposite buttoning on his coat. This piece was likely created in 1799, the same year Constable joined the Royal Academy Schools. The print has been colour-matched to the original and approved by the National Portrait Gallery. About the artist

John Constable , 1776-1837, was an English Romantic painter known for his landscape paintings of the English countryside. He was a major influence in the development of the English landscape school and was one of the first painters to depict nature realistically. Constable was born in Suffolk and studied at the Royal Academy in London. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1829. Constable's works are held in many public collections, including the Tate Gallery in London.
