About this artwork

The artwork portrays Stratford Mill, which used to be a water-driven paper mill on the River Stour in Suffolk. Sadly, the mill doesn't exist anymore as it has been torn down. In the artwork, Constable highlights the mill under a shadow, with beams of sunlight piercing through the nearby trees alongside the winding river. This piece is included in a collection of grand-scale Stour landscape paintings that Constable showcased at the Royal Academy from 1819 to 1825. The print's colour scheme is accurate to the original, having been authenticated by the National Gallery. Whenever you buy one, you're indirectly supporting the museum's work.

About the artist

John Constable , 1776-1837, was an English Romantic painter known for his landscape paintings of the English countryside. He was a major influence in the development of the English landscape school and was one of the first painters to depict nature realistically. Constable was born in Suffolk and studied at the Royal Academy in London. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1829. Constable's works are held in many public collections, including the Tate Gallery in London.
