About this artwork

John William Waterhouse was a British artist who was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This group consisted of artists, critics, and poets from the mid-19th century who concentrated on recreating traditional themes like religion with graceful compositions and as realistically as possible. One of his paintings showcases a young lady, caught in the wind and covered in a slate-blue fabric. This is his take on 'Boreas', the Greek deity who is seen as the cold north wind and the herald of winter.

About the artist

John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter known for his depictions of classical and mythological themes. He was influenced by the works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, and was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. Waterhouse was born in Rome, Italy, and moved to London in 1854. He was a prolific painter, producing over 200 works in his lifetime, and was known for his use of vibrant colours and attention to detail. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
