About this artwork

John William Waterhouse was a well known English artist who was part of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This was a collective of artists, critics, and poets from the mid-19th century whose main focus was on traditional themes like religion. They aimed to portray these themes with sophisticated compositions and as much realism as possible. Between the years of 1908 and 1914, Waterhouse created a range of images featuring women and flowers. This particular print was a study created in anticipation of one of his 'flower women' pieces, titled 'The Bouquet'. This work showcased a woman with red hair, dressed in green, clutching a handful of roses.

About the artist

John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter known for his depictions of classical and mythological themes. He was influenced by the works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, and was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. Waterhouse was born in Rome, Italy, and moved to London in 1854. He was a prolific painter, producing over 200 works in his lifetime, and was known for his use of vibrant colours and attention to detail. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
