About this artwork

'An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump' is the most daring and theatrical of Joseph Wright's candlelit paintings from the 1760s. This artwork encapsulates a group of people gathered around a lecturer, engrossed in a choreographed scientific experiment. Wright intricately highlights the different reactions of the viewers, from a girl who can't bear to watch, to a couple lost in each other's eyes. This reproduction is color-accurate to the original, with approval from the National Gallery. Every purchase aids the operations of the museum.

UK - £6.90 for unframed items by Royal Mail Special Delivery

About the artist

Known as Joseph Wright of Derby, Joseph Wright ARA (3 September 1734 – 29 August 1797) was a well known English artist famed for his landscape and portrait works. He's often hailed as "the first professional artist to capture the essence of the Industrial Revolution."

Wright is well-known for employing tenebrism, a heightened version of the more familiar chiaroscuro technique, which plays up the contrast between light and dark. He's also well-famed for his masterpieces featuring subjects illuminated by candlelight.
