About this artwork

Leonardo da Vinci, a highly respected artist of the High Renaissance era, is often celebrated as one of the greatest painters in history. Initially, Da Vinci rose to fame through his incredible painting skills, but his insightful notebooks on science and invention also earned him much acclaim. His most famous piece, the 'Mona Lisa', is a half-length portrait of Lisa Gherardini, an Italian noblewoman, which he created between 1503 and 1517. This work is a shining example of the Italian Renaissance and is often dubbed as 'the most well-known, the most frequented, the most written about, the most sung about, and the most parodied artwork in the world'.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian polymath, well known for his contributions to the fields of painting, sculpting, architecture, science, mathematics, engineering, anatomy, geology, botany, and cartography. He was one of the most influential artists of the High Renaissance period, and his works are well known for their technical mastery and innovative use of perspective. His personal life was marked by a deep interest in science and technology, and he was also a prolific inventor.
