About this artwork

Frederic Leighton was a UK-based artist who specialised in painting, drawing, and sculpture. His creations frequently portrayed themes from the Bible, history, and classical literature using a Neoclassical approach. In 1877, he created a piece called 'The Music Lesson', which is an oil painting showcasing a mature woman instructing a younger girl on playing the Turkish saz. The work is imbued with a sense of exoticism, thanks to the glistening fabrics, decorated tiles, and vibrant colours.

About the artist

Lord Frederic Leighton (1830-1896) was a British painter and sculptor who was a leading figure in the classical revival of the late 19th century. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts and was known for his classical and historical paintings, as well as his sculptures. He was heavily influenced by the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and his works often featured classical themes and figures. He was also a patron of the arts, and his home in London was a gathering place for many of the leading artists of the day.
