About this artwork

There's a good chance that this portrait is the one that was bought for five pounds back in November 1544. Records from that time mention 'a certain John who painted her majesty on a wooden panel' around the same period. This replica matches the original's colours and got the thumbs up from the National Portrait Gallery. Every time you buy, you're helping the museum out.

About the artist

Active during 1544-1545, Master John was a noteworthy British painter. His timeframe of activity coincided with an interesting juncture in British art history, the 1540s. The death of the famed German artist Hans Holbein, who was deeply adored by Henry VIII, had notably left a gap in the portrait market.

Master John stood out from his contemporaries, mainly because he seemed to be a native of Britain, a rarity during a time when native artists were just beginning to earn acclaim. What set him apart was his meticulous focus on costume detail, his extensive use of gold and silver leafing and his distinct painting style. His preference for working on isolated parts over a unified whole was a characteristic feature of English art during that period.
