About this artwork

Michelangelo, a high Renaissance Italian artist, had a profound impact on the evolution of Western art. His dynamic artistic abilities as a sculptor, painter, architect, and poet earned him the reputation of being the quintessential Renaissance man. This graphic highlights a part of Michelangelo’s ceiling painting for the Sistine Chapel, 'The Creation of Adam'. It beautifully depicts the biblical story where God breathes life into Adam, the first man. The almost touching hands of God and Adam is a powerful symbol that has been reproduced numerous times throughout history.
