About this artwork

'Noli me Tangere' by Titian is an art piece portraying Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. After his resurrection, Christ is seen by a sorrowful Mary Magdalene who instinctively tries to touch him out of shock. In response, Christ tells her 'Do not touch me' (or in Latin, noli me tangere), signaling it's time for his followers to release their attachment to his physical form and anticipate the arrival of the Holy Ghost (John 20: 14-18). Created around 1514, 'Noli me Tangere' is one of the earliest pieces by Titian that is part of the National Gallery's collection. This replica is colour-matched to the original artwork and has the National Gallery's seal of approval. Every purchase contributes to the museum's operations.

About the artist

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, 1488-1576) was an Italian painter of the High Renaissance period, well known for his use of colour and his masterful technique. He was a major influence on the Venetian school of painting, and his works are considered some of the most important in the history of Western art. Titian was born in Pieve di Cadore, in the Republic of Venice, and was apprenticed to the artist Sebastiano Zuccato. He later worked with Giorgione and Giovanni Bellini, and was a close friend of the poet Pietro Aretino. Titian was also a court painter for the ruling families of Venice, and was knighted by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.
