About this artwork

Rembrandt's artwork 'Belshazzar's Feast' portrays a narrative from the Old Testament. The gentleman dressed in a gold cloak and turban represents Belshazzar, the Babylonian King. His father looted the Temple of Jerusalem of its hallowed vessels. Belshazzar then used these vessels to serve food at a party, an act considered sacrilegious, and in a matter of hours, he was murdered. Rembrandt has amplified the drama of an already tense scene by presenting the characters against a dark backdrop. This print, which is colour-matched to the original painting, has been given the stamp of approval by the National Gallery. The proceeds from each sale contribute to the museum's work.
