About this artwork

The "word" paintings have left me a bit speechless, but I suppose their aim is to speak for themselves. They're simply a version of wall writing, a raw and honest exposure of my innermost thoughts, with the freedom to overwrite at will. The uncompromising directness is the key, it's all me, raw and unedited. Nothing's premeditated, the words just pop up in my mind and I paint them as they surface. They're not overly cautious, because being too cautious can be stifling and dilute the essence. Yet, these words are more than just words, they're paintings, with layers of history and the rough charm of decaying wall graffiti. Mayhaps, I'm just a poet whose only vernacular is the language of paint, and these paintings have turned into my voice. The art is deeply personal, but that's what makes it even more profound. Expressing exactly what I want to say has given me a sense of liberation, even though the words might be subtle or concealed, they're still there, lurking beneath the surface, they have been expressed. — Niki Hare
