About this artwork

Alcove Window: Hall of the Two Sisters' is a piece by the English-Welsh architect, Owen Jones (1809-74). It's part of his seminal work, 'Plans, Elevations, Sections and Details of The Alhambra', which was published in London between 1842-45. Jones was a real jack-of-all-trades when it came to architecture and design. He was one of the major forces shaping design theory in the 19th century, having a huge impact on colour theory. His ideas on flat patterning and ornament are still influential among modern designers.Jones really made a name for himself through his work on Islamic decoration at the Alhambra. His published drawings, featuring innovative chromolithography techniques, really got people talking. Alongside Henry Cole, the first director of the South Kensington Museum (renamed later as the Victoria and Albert Museum), Jones played a significant role in setting up this notable institution, shaping design reform in the 19th century.Jones was all about finding a contemporary style that was unique to the 19th century. He wanted something that was a total departure from the typical aesthetics of Neo-Classicism and the Gothic Revival. He found a lot of his inspiration in the Islamic world, using his research on Islamic decoration at the Alhambra to develop theories on flat patterning, geometry and abstract ornamentation.

About the artist

Owen Jones, who lived from 1809 to 1874, was a multifaceted architect and designer, and was considered a leading design theorist of the 19th century. His significant contributions had a profound impact on modern aesthetics during the time. Known for his extensive travels, Jones drew a great deal from the Islamic world for his innovative theories on design and colour.

He was among the pioneering architects who studied the Alhambra and was deeply fascinated by its vibrant hues and complex geometrical designs. This profound experience led him to dedicate subsequent years to the development of chromolithography, a chemical printing method that enabled the creation of multicoloured prints, a feat unmatched by existing printing techniques of the time.

This trip to the Alhambra sparked Jones' deep appreciation of colour and his advocacy for its use in all facets of contemporary design. Amidst a 19th-century Britain heavily influenced by historical revivals, Jones sought to forge a distinctive modern style. His design guide, "The Grammar of Ornament," published in 1856, encapsulates his theories and features the finest examples of ornamentation and decoration from various cultures and eras.
