About this artwork

"Hip Hip Hurrah! Artists' Party at Skagen" is an oil on canvas masterpiece created by the Danish painter, Peder Severin Krøyer. The painting features members of the Skagen painters' guild, which was a collective of artists from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden who came together in Skagen, Denmark. "Hip Hip Hurrah" is heavily influenced by the style of French Impressionists, as it celebrates the interplay of light in the composition, while also paying homage to the classic artists of the Dutch Golden Age.

About the artist

Peder Severin Krøyer, often known as P.S. Krøyer (1851-1909), was brought up by his maternal aunt and her husband, the notable zoologist Henrik Nikolai Krøyer. He started learning art at nine with a private tutor after moving to Copenhagen with his guardians. By fourteen, he had enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His talents were evident early on and his portraits were widely admired, making him a sought-after artist. In 1870, at nineteen, he concluded his studies with Frederik Vermehren at the same academy.

Afterward, he stayed in Paris under the guidance of Léon Bonnat and was inspired by the Impressionists. Traveling was a major part of his life, influencing his artwork. In 1882, he returned to Denmark and started painting life at Skagen, a secluded fishing village. He and his wife, Marie Krøyer, made Skagen their permanent residence from 1891, and his celebrated artwork, 'Summer Evening in Skagen Sønderstrand' in 1893, comes from this period.

Despite his declining eyesight towards the end of his life, his optimism shone through as he continued painting, creating some of his most remarkable work while partially blind.
