About this artwork

'At the Theatre', a piece created by Pierre Auguste Renoir in 1876, showcases two young females seated in a theatre box. The stage isn't visible, and one woman is turned away, her bonnet concealing most of the face of the other woman. The woman closer to us enhances this air of intrigue by leaning forward, suggesting she's engrossed in something. Back in the 1800s, going to the theatre was a significant social occasion, so it's possible the woman spotted a familiar face in the crowd. This print is an exact colour replica of the original art and has the seal of approval from the National Gallery. Every purchase aids the museum's endeavours.

About the artist

Pierre Auguste Renoir (25 February 1841 – 3 December 1919) was a French Impressionist painter who was a leading figure in the development of the movement. He was one of the most prolific and influential painters of the 19th century, and his works are characterised by their vibrant light and saturated colour. Renoir was born in Limoges, Haute-Vienne, and studied art in Paris. He was a close friend of Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, and his works are often compared to those of the other Impressionists. Renoir was also a prolific sculptor, and his works are found in many public collections. He was married twice and had seven children, four of whom became painters.
