About this artwork

Edmond, the brother of Auguste Renoir, and Nini Lopez, a model fondly nicknamed 'fish-face', were the models for this theatrical box painting. Edmond is seen scrutinizing the crowd through his opera glasses, while Nini carries hers casually, her gaze sort of distant, as though she’s aware of being observed. The painting, La Loge, was featured in the first group exhibition of the Impressionists in 1874. It garnered mixed reviews from critics. One interpreted the female subject as a symbol of the potential dangers of the fashion world, while another admired her sophistication. About the artist

Pierre Auguste Renoir (25 February 1841 – 3 December 1919) was a French Impressionist painter who was a leading figure in the development of the movement. He was one of the most prolific and influential painters of the 19th century, and his works are characterised by their vibrant light and saturated colour. Renoir was born in Limoges, Haute-Vienne, and studied art in Paris. He was a close friend of Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, and his works are often compared to those of the other Impressionists. Renoir was also a prolific sculptor, and his works are found in many public collections. He was married twice and had seven children, four of whom became painters.
