About the artist

In the 18th century, Pierre Joseph Buchoz (1731-1807) was a Frenchman who mastered the fields of law, medicine, and botany. His passion for the curative potential of various plants led him to pursue a medical degree in Nancy in 1763. Fascinated by botany, he also explored mental health treatments, endorsing music as a remedy for melancholy. His studies took him across Lorraine, resulting in a comprehensive 13-volume natural history of the province.

His magnus opus was the “Histoire universelle du règne végétal ou nouveau dictionnaire physique et economique," released between 1773 and 1778. The work was ambitious and encompassed approximately 1,200 meticulously detailed plant engravings, with many stemming from the original illustrations housed in the Museum d’ Histoire Naturelle in Paris. Notably, these exceptional engravings outshone those of his contemporaries.

Buchoz was well known for his illustrated natural history books, which rank among the finest of his era. His works feature an unprecedented use of Chinese botanical art, introducing a distinct oriental influence.
