About this artwork

Pieter Bruegel The Elder was a monumental figure in the Dutch Renaissance art scene. He broke away from the traditional religious themes that were predominant in early European art, instead choosing to pioneer new renditions of landscapes and scenes of common folk. One of his masterpieces, 'Landscape with the Fall of Icarus,' portrays a moment from Greek mythology where Icarus, the son of skilled artisan Daedalus, falls into the sea. You can spot his legs sticking out of the sea near the ship in the bottom left corner of the painting. Above the sea, two shepherds are seen toiling away on their land, symbolizing humanity's general apathy towards suffering as life goes on, even in the face of Icarus' death.

About the artist

Pieter Bruegel The Elder (1525-1569) was a Flemish Renaissance painter and printmaker known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. He was a pioneer of genre painting and his style was a precursor to the Baroque. He was influenced by the Italian Renaissance and the work of Hieronymus Bosch. Bruegel was a devout Catholic and his works often contained moral and religious messages. He was also a skilled draughtsman and engraver.
