About this artwork

From 1634 to 1637, Pieter Saenredam created a collection of images showcasing the inside of St. Bavo's Cathedral in Haarlem, Netherlands. Saenredam started by sketching on site, then created more detailed drawings using precise measurements, and finally transferred the end product onto the panel to capture a realistic representation. But after uncovering additional studies of the Cathedral, it was discovered that Saenredam had made a few changes to his painting to make the church seem more grand and monumental. This print is color matched to the original artwork and has been given the green light by the National Gallery. Every purchase made contributes to the museum's work.

About the artist

Born in Assendelft in 1597, Pieter Saenredam was an innovative Dutch artist who specialised in painting church interiors and topographical scenes. He was a trailblazer in his field, being among the first to emphasise geographical precision in his sketches despite making slight alterations in his paintings for visual effects. Saenredam was especially fascinated by the challenge of capturing the play of natural light in expansive, intricate interiors.

The son of an engraver, Saenredam received his education in Haarlem, where he studied under Frans Pietersz de Grebber until 1622. He earned his place in the Haarlem guild of painters the following year. Although he produced geographical drawings of various other Dutch towns, his main focus was centered in Haarlem. He remained actively engaged with eminent architects of his era, including Jacob van Campen, the architect behind Amsterdam Town Hall. Saenredam died in 1665.
