About this artwork

Raphael was a well known Italian artist and architect from the High Renaissance period, celebrated for his clear forms and easy compositions. He's often linked with Michelangelo and da Vinci, forming the legendary trio of master artists from that era. This particular print showcases the unique winged cherubs featured at the bottom of Raphael's 'Sistine Madonna' oil painting. The artwork portrays the Madonna cradling the Christ child, with two saints standing by her side.

About the artist

Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. He is best known for his Madonnas and for his large figure compositions in the Vatican. His work is admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Raphael was greatly influenced by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. He was born in Urbino, Italy and died in Rome at the age of 37. He was a prolific artist and his work was highly sought after during his lifetime.
