About the artist

Henry Raeburn was the progeny of a prosperous Edinburgh wool merchant. He lost his parents prematurely in the 1760s and was raised by his elder brother, William. Henry's education revealed his talent for practical crafts, leading to a 1772 apprenticeship with goldsmith James Gilliland. During this period, he also began exploring miniature portrait painting and took sketching classes. After his apprenticeship, he embraced a career as a portraitist.

In the 1790s, Raeburn developed a distinctive style marked by vivid backlighting and scattering across the canvas, establishing him as a sought-after portraitist. His full-length portraits, especially of Scottish Highland chiefs and lairds in military dress, attracted significant attention in London.

In 1819, he joined the American Academy of Fine Arts, became a Royal Society of Edinburgh fellow in 1820, received knighthood in 1822, and was appointed as King George IV's Painter and Limner in 1823. Unfortunately, a sudden fever, likely caught during a trip to Fife, claimed his life in July 1823.
