About this artwork
This portrait of Sir Walter Ralegh was completed in the same year the Spanish Armada decided to attack, making it one of the few images of Ralegh in his prime. He's decked out in a truly dramatic suit, adorned with pearls, a symbol of innocence that Queen Elizabeth I really liked. These pearls are arranged on his cloak to look like the rays of a 'sun-in-splendour', a design you often see in heraldry. After some in-depth research and preservation efforts, a patch of rippled water was found just under the crescent moon. This design, symbolizing Queen Elizabeth I as the moon goddess Cynthia, also appears in Ralegh's poetry and suggests he was ready to be ruled by the queen in the same way that the moon rules the tides. The portrait also has two Latin inscriptions, one on the left which translates to 'By love and virtue', and the one on the right that notes Ralegh's age at the time (34) and the year the portrait was done (1588).
