About this artwork

Back in 1888, Vincent Van Gogh made the decision to pack up and leave Paris. He headed down to the south of France, hoping to find a climate that was a bit warmer. By the time February rolled around, he had managed to settle himself in the quaint city of Arles. The weather at first was unusually chilly for the area, but it didn’t take long before things shifted. Soon, the climate became much warmer and the fruit trees were bursting with blossoms. Van Gogh found himself moved by the seasonal beauty which inspired him to create a collection of paintings that focused on these blooming trees. He experimented with various sizes, layouts and styles. One of his pieces, 'Flouring Orchards', features the budding trees with their angular, elongated branches, which reflects his interest in the art of Japanese woodcut printing.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
