About this artwork

Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist, was known for his diverse collection of works, spanning from landscapes to self-portraits. He had a distinct style defined by vibrant colours and dynamic brushstrokes. In 1888, he created a piece titled 'Oleanders'. Van Gogh had a fondness for oleanders, viewing them as symbols of joy and vitality due to their year-round bloom. He chose to portray these flowers in a majolica jug, a prop he often used in his still life paintings. Interestingly, he also represented Émile Zola's 'La joie de vivre', a novel he was particularly fond of, in this work.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
