About this artwork

Van Gogh plunged headfirst into the task of painting the vibrant orchards dotted around Arles in southern France, where he took up residence in February 1888. You can still see the structure of the plum tree branches through the blossom cover, and his brushwork follows the direction of the vertical tree trunks. He created numerous art pieces featuring orchards during his highly productive periods in Arles. His early enthusiasm, documented in letters to his brother Theo, inspired Gauguin to join him. However, their contrasting temperaments led to frequent disputes. The subsequent year, Van Gogh's mental health deteriorated, leading to his admission to the Saint-Remy asylum.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
