About this artwork

Vincent van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist Dutch artist well known for his wide-ranging creations, from stunning landscapes to raw self-portraits, all accentuated by powerful hues and animated brushstrokes. Throughout his life, Van Gogh struggled with both mental and physical health issues which led to his admission to an asylum in Saint-Remy, France, in 1889.During his stay at the mental institution, Van Gogh gave birth to the masterpiece 'Self Portrait.' The melting array of colors and erratic patterns in this artwork convey a sense of tension and stress, symbolizing the intense mental, physical, and emotional turmoil the artist was suffering at the time.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
