About this artwork

The artwork 'Self-portrait with bandaged ear' was created by well known Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh in 1889. During a heated disagreement with fellow artist Paul Gauguin, Van Gogh experienced a seizure while holding a razor, resulting in him cutting off a piece of his left ear. This self-portrait features the bandage he used to cover his ear. The painting is characterised by heavy brush strokes, mostly arranged vertically to add depth and texture to the otherwise flat canvas. The color of this print is perfectly matched to the original, with approval from the Courtauld Gallery. Every sale of this print helps support the Courtauld's mission and work.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
