About this artwork

We only have one photograph of Vincent Van Gogh left since he died in 1890 - a monochrome snapshot of him as a young man of 19. The rest of what we understand about how Van Gogh looked comes from his self-portraits. One of these, 'Self Portrait with Grey Felt Hat', was created by him during the 1887-1888 winter in Paris. This artwork is one of Van Gogh’s most daring color trials, where he put contrasting colors next to each other. He also utilised heavy brushstrokes in varying directions, drawing inspiration from Pointillism, a recently established technique by George Surat and Paul Signac.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
