About this artwork

Lacking money but determined to improve his talents as a representative artist, Vincent Van Gogh turned out to be his best subject. He intentionally purchased a good-quality mirror to make numerous self-portraits throughout his profession. In 1887, Van Gogh created the 'Self Portrait with Straw Hat and Artist’s Smock'. Financial difficulties plagued Van Gogh's career, with cardboard often replacing traditional canvas. For this particular artwork, he applied coats of purple pigment on the cardboard directly. However, as time passed, the primer has worn off, leaving only a few traces of pink visible on his smock.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
