About this artwork

Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist, was known for a wide variety of works, ranging from landscapes to self-portraits. His style was distinguished by vibrant colours and emotive brushwork. During his last year, Van Gogh resided in Auvers, a small commune located on the outskirts of Paris, France to the northwest. It was here that he painted 'Wheatfield with Crows' on a double square canvas. The artwork features a turbulent sky teeming with crows, hovering above a wheat field. It's believed that Van Gogh incorporated the crows in his piece as a symbol of death and sadness.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
