About this artwork

Henri Matisse's 'The Velvets' is part of his famous 'cut outs' collection from 1947. After undergoing stomach cancer surgery in 1941, Matisse found himself bedridden. However, he didn't let this stop him from creating art with the support of his assistants. Armed with a pair of scissors, he began to cut various shapes from sheets of paper that had been previously painted with vibrant gouache colours. The vivid botanical motif of this print subtly hints at the tropical landscapes he encountered during his 1930 trip to Tahiti. This piece is a excellent digital print on Tintoretto 250gsm paper.
