About this artwork

Joachim Beuckelaer created a series of four big paintings, each representing one of the four elements - earth, air, fire, and water - using food as symbolism. In the backdrop of one such painting, you can spot a Biblical scene set in the Virgin Mary's kitchen. When Martha, Mary's sister, voiced her annoyance at Mary's perceived idleness, Christ defended her, stating that she made the better choice by choosing to sit by Him and listen. This reproduction print has been meticulously color-matched to the original artwork and has received the stamp of approval from the National Gallery. Every time you purchase, you're helping support the museum and its work.

About the artist

Born around 1533 and passing away approximately in 1570/4, Joachim Beuckelaer was a distinguished Flemish artist known for his focus on market and kitchen scenes which featured detailed depictions of food and home appliances. He also created still life pieces without any central figures. His contribution to the development of these genres was significant, impacting the evolution of still life art not only in Northern Europe but also in Italy.

Beuckelaer came from a family of painters in Antwerp and refined his skills under the tutelage of Pieter Aertsen. By 1560, he had branched out on his own, and went on to enhance and expand on Aertsen's pioneering work, arguably surpassing his mentor in expertise.

Both Beuckelaer and Aertsen are celebrated for their market and kitchen scenes, displaying domestic life and foodstuffs on a grand scale, often with convincing details. These scenes often serve as a contrast to a biblical theme in the backdrop, aiming to show a deliberate juxtaposition between the material and the spiritual world.
