About the artist
Beuckelaer came from a family of painters in Antwerp and refined his skills under the tutelage of Pieter Aertsen. By 1560, he had branched out on his own, and went on to enhance and expand on Aertsen's pioneering work, arguably surpassing his mentor in expertise.
Both Beuckelaer and Aertsen are celebrated for their market and kitchen scenes, displaying domestic life and foodstuffs on a grand scale, often with convincing details. These scenes often serve as a contrast to a biblical theme in the backdrop, aiming to show a deliberate juxtaposition between the material and the spiritual world.
