About this artwork

The poster in question is the work of well known American avant-garde artist Man Ray, who's recognised as one of the most impactful artists of the last century. It's one half of a 'dual poster', and interestingly, it's the sole project Man Ray took on for London Transport. He created it during a short stint in London after leaving Paris for Hollywood. Through his clever and whimsical photomontage, he morphed London Transport's famous roundel logo into Saturn, the planet. His selection of theme could be due to his strong fascination with modern science fiction. London Transport published this piece in 1938. This print is an accurate replica of the original one, sourced from the historical poster collection at the London Transport Museum. Every purchase goes towards supporting the museum's initiatives.

About the artist

Man Ray, a well known American artist and filmmaker, was born on August 27, 1890, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died on November 18, 1976, in Paris, France. He was a prominent figure in American modernism during the 1910s, before making Paris his home in the subsequent decades. He then moved back to America in the 1940s, dividing his time between New York and Hollywood.

His work, spread across various forms like painting, sculpture, film, poetry, and prints, was influenced by diverse styles such as Cubism, Futurism, Dada, and Surrealism. Despite his successful ventures into commercial and fine art, even becoming a coveted fashion photographer, he always saw himself primarily as a painter. Man Ray is perhaps best known for his 'Rayographs', camera-free pictures from the inter-war era.

André Breton aptly labeled him a 'pre-Surrealist', highlighting Man Ray's natural inclination towards this style.
